Welcome to our comprehensive video guide on how to demould and clean pavers. As well as being a talented lyricist and songwriter, Val is also a seasoned large-landscape paving specialist (and geologist!).
In these videos, Val shares practical, eco-friendly techniques to remove mould and keep your outdoor spaces looking tidy, without the need for a water gurney. Learn how to care for your pavers safely and effectively! .
This technique works well on sloped areas too. Don't forget to wear a good COVID-style mask for protection during this process!
Val is using a 4kg bucket of pool Chlorine Granules, available at any hardware or pool shop. The area cleaned was roughly the size of a 3-car garage. The area shown in this video had been underwater during a flood.
First, remove as much debris and dirt from the pavers as possible. Use a combination of tools such as a leaf blower, rake and broom — whatever you have at hand. This will ensure the surface is clear for the next steps. Don't worry if there are grass roots or stubborn organic material left behind—the chlorine granules will kill them during the activation stage, making them easier to remove during your next regular maintenance.
Once the area is prepped, hose down the pavers thoroughly until the debris is hosed away as much as possible. This sets the stage for effective cleaning.
These two dispersal videos demonstrate the easy method of spreading granules over your pavers, creating a light snow-like dusting for even coverage. Be sure to watch both for additional safety tips from Val to ensure a safe and effective cleaning process.
Don't forget to watch Step 2, these both contain important information.
After granule dispersal, it's time to lightly mist them with water.
Remove any fixtures from your hose. To reduce the water pressure, gently kink your hose then place your finger over the end of the hose to create a very light mist. This ensures that they dissolve without washing them away or forming puddles and allows them to begin working on the dirt and mould effectively.
Leave them for about an hour, checking regularly to see if they are completely dissolved.
The final step in cleaning dirt and mould from your pavers is crucial for ensuring a safe and effective finish. After applying the granules and misting them with water to activate the bleach, allow it to sit for a while. During this time, the solution works to break down the dirt and mould. Once the bleach is no longer active, it becomes safe to rinse away. You can then hose the area down, directing the runoff safely into your garden without causing harm to plants or the environment.
